Mickey's Gripes and Ramblings
Love stories make me cry and Brokeback Mountain was no exception.
I wept for my waste of an afternoon and seven dollars.I will
cry unashamedly when it wins an Oscar for best movie and it
will because of its content and the" BRAVERY" to
show it on the big screen. Mamas don't let your babies grow
up to be cowboys. In my opinion the best movies of the year
were:
1.Cinderella Man.
2.Crash.
3.Match Point.
4Walk the Line.
5.North Country.
I will be delighted if Paul Giamatti and Reese Witherspoon
win awards.
On Christmas Day Mike Sheehan and his mother held a party
to celebrate Christmas. That's right Christmas. We discussed
our favorite movies and also actors and actresses. The highlight
was when we turned to the most irritating ones.Among those
prominently mentioned were Steve Martin, Whoopi Goldberg,
Kevin Costner, Meryl Streep, Susan Sarandon, Billy Crystal,
Tom Cruise, Nicholas Cage, Julia Roberts, Ellen Barkin, Robin
Willliams, all of the Baldwins and Bridges. Please send us
additions to our list.I saw Pride and Prejudice on the plane
going to Ireland last week.It narrowly missed my top five
but as consolation Keira Knightley is my new girlfriend. I
expect Kate Hudson will take the news very badly but I did
give her some of the best years of my life.
I watched the World Cup live in 1966.Forty years later I
am not about to watch any sporting event on tape delay especially
with the results on the internet and when every other country
gets to watch them live. There is no fun in watching the Olympics
just waiting for the fall you knew about hours before. If
I want to watch something from the past I might as well put
on The History Channel.
Jim Dunne and the Medway over 40's soccer team compete every
Wednesday at the John Smith bubble. They wear jerseys bearing
our logo and recently invited me to play in one of their games.
They suffered a rare and in fact their heaviest defeat 5-0.
I contributed in no uncertain way to the final result. Good
luck for the rest of the season, guys.
Mike Carretta, Richie Carberry and I entered the Medway Foundation
for Education Spelling Bee as defending champions and left
as former champions. Medway Oil Company emerged victorious
with a team of 3 guys more geeky than ourselves.
Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe wrote in Tuesday's paper
"Baseball has always had its share of weird injuries,
and so have the Red Sox". I emailed him and the following
exchange took place:
In reference to the first sentence of your article yesterday, are
the Red Sox not a baseball team?
Mr. (Ms.?) Cassidy, Was that a trick question? I presume
you think the correct wording should have been "including
the Red Sox." From a purely technical standpoint, the
point is well taken. But I would submit that what I wrote
is acceptable as well. "Baseball" in general and
"the Red Sox" specifically have had their share
of weird injuries. Thanks for writing, Gordon
Thank you for affording me the courtesy of a reply. I am
just extremely picky. I love to read your articles. If you
are ever in Medway stop by and see me.
Mr. Cassidy, Picky readers often are the best kind--they
demand more. Thanks for reading,. Gordon
Unlike many of his peers and colleagues, Gordon took the
time to reply and showed a lot of class. Thank you Gordon.
Speaking of sports correspondents with class Greg Dickerson
occasionally drops by the pub. He mingles freely with our
patrons and is always up for a sports debate. He also gives
us a generous plug on the radio, WEEI 103.7. Greg certainly
has not let celebrity go to his head. He is always a welcome
and refreshing guest at our establishment.
Kerry, the kids and I spent February vacation week in Ireland.
Kerry and I went to a Chinese restaurant to get a curry but
they were closed. The notice on the door written in elegant
handwriting said "We are doing a major renovation. Business
will resume until further notice". But we found another
Chinese and satisfied our craving. It seems that the Chinese
export the people that make good curry to Ireland and the
hot and sour soup experts come to Massachusetts. We spent
a day in Ennis, Co. Clare, which is my favorite town in Ireland
and should be visited by anybody who takes the trip over.
We were invited to Ballymaloe House, www.ballymaloe.ie
as guests of Frankie Gavin, the renowned fiddle player. Frankie
was hosting a week of Irish music in these idyllic surroundings.
My mother came with us and we enjoyed dinner and accommodations.
When I was informed that I had to sing for my supper I asked
if a few jokes would suffice and they settled for that. The
following morning when strolling through the grounds we encroached
too far into goose territory. The gander put his head down
and took off in our direction. My mother broke the world record
for the 100 meters and poor little Michael almost jumped in
the river. However we escaped intact and headed for home.
Thank you Rory Allen for your hospitality and thank you Frankie
for a great time. Hopefully Frankie will return soon to Medway
to entertain us.
Our sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mark
Frascona. Mark was a great friend to us all at Mickey Cassidys.
He passed away at the early age of 30 and will be missed by
all of us. Mark will be remembered as a jolly, friendly person,
a great Red Sox supporter and a true Yankee hater. May he
rest in peace.
Our sympathies also to the Graham family in Limerick for
the loss of Michael Senior, the head of that family.
Happy St. Patrick's Day everybody.
That's all for now folks,
Mickey
